The Task Illusion

Updated: Feb 20, 2024

Don’t get haunted by your tasks. If you remember that you got something important to do, don’t let this fact put a heavy weight on your psychological state. Go step by step to tackle the overwhelming heaviness of any task.

First, acknowledge the fact that you are responsible for doing that task. Second, debunk any idea about the difficulty of that task. This will be quite easy to do. Just remove the impression you get from thinking about the task as a whole. Think in terms of steps in a complex and long procedure. Think about the first thing to do, the second, the third, and so on.

Then talk yourself through it and convince yourself that the task is quite doable and shouldn’t haunt you the way it does. Don’t get frustrated by the difficulty of the first step; just put yourself into the process, and everything shall be fine.

This way of dealing with difficult tasks can be generalized to all heavy things in life. If you are going to face something you don’t like, experience a stressful event, or attend a troublesome meeting, think of the difficulty you have to deal with as a process that is made of small steps. You won’t need to make that scary jump you thought you should; you will walk in steps, so there is nothing to be scared of. Be rational about things happening in life, and you will be mostly happy.
