How to Keep Going

Updated: Feb 20, 2024

Give yourself some breaks. Don’t always force yourself. Never force yourself to do what you don’t like. But be careful; for not all what you don’t like, you actually don’t like. If what you expect from yourself is overwhelming you, revise it. Be kind to yourself. Motivation will not be at your access all the time; you have to build up some habits. To be able to preserve them, start small and be consistent. Be very strict about what you have to do, and yet, very reasonable. Most people expect quite much from themselves and do nothing. Expect less and do more.

Some days, you will not feel like doing anything. You may then give yourself some rest. But don’t fall into the trap of laziness.

Don’t just abstain from all healthy activities, but do something that will be easy on you and not very demanding. Your schedule should always include pleasing activities, things you like to do. You won’t be able to keep going if all you got is forcing yourself to in a way you don’t like. It is essential to be convinced of your cause. No matter how trivial it may seem, it is significant; for it is something you work and act for. No opinion matters here except yours. Follow it.

Order the tasks and activities in your schedule in terms of priority. This doesn’t have to be a strict ordering; at least have a sense of their importance because some days you won’t be able to do them all, and you will have to compromise. Be flexible. Again, never fall into the trap of being overwhelmed by everything and doing nothing. Remove some tasks; you won’t be injured. In fact, you will be happy at the end of the day when you find that you successfully managed your day despite the hard times. Keep some activities that should never ever be removed from your day, no matter what happens. These should be things very close to yourself and contribute to the meaning you attach to life. Think about yourself and decide what this could be.

And one last thing, have a schedule. Otherwise, you won’t probably survive. It doesn’t have to be very neat and punctual (in fact, it better not be, especially in the beginning), but it should give you some sense of what important things you got to do in your day. Some activities will be new every day according to your arising needs and responsibilities. But other activities should be fixed; you ought to do them every day; they create your daily routine. It is crucial to have a daily routine. If it is difficult because of your lifestyle, try to fix your lifestyle as much as you can. It is always fine when you have done the best you can.
