If you have a certain goal, a specific activity you like to do, or an item you enjoy having, don’t spoil your happiness by distracting yourself with irrelevant details. Looking around for people who are better than you in achieving that goal, comparing yourself to better performers of that activity, or checking whether the people you know have better items, all this is meant to turn your satisfaction with your life into sheer distress. Such a comparison will not give you any good feeling. Learn to occupy yourself with yourself. Improve yourself. Act for your own sake in all possible ways.
This does not mean that you should be selfish, for selfish people do not really love themselves; they just seem to. Selfishness is an act against your own benefit in all ways. This may be another blog topic! What you need to learn now is to focus on your own business. Care for yourself and be happy for others too. Do not envy people for having what you don’t, for this will ruin your time with what you have and will not grant you what you don’t. Be content with yourself and the kind of life you lead. If you have a child, you should know what it is like to love your own kid. You usually wouldn’t be looking for other people’s kids who are prettier, smarter, or healthier, comparing them to yours and feeling sad about it. Treat yourself equally well.
If you focus on your effort for development and improvement, you should be happy. Remember that everyone has their own story and struggles for a better life. Don’t look from the surface and make judgments about them or about yourself. Nothing positive can be gained from this. Focus on your business. Live your life. Avoiding distraction is crucial for your mental well-being. If you get distracted by such comparisons, you may have the best kind of life and still be unhappy with it. If so, then why bother? Let such worries go, and be content with what you got. Happiness is a choice. Choose it.
A typical reaction to such an idea is that it encourages people to have no ambition in life and to be satisfied with their unsatisfactory states. It doesn’t. What is said is meant to be addressing those who actually work and act for a better life. If they do so, they should be happy. Why should they be distracted by others’ deeds when they are doing the best they can or just doing well? Always aim for better, but do not lose sight of what you have. Experience your present in its fullness, and keep an eye on the future. Life comes in whole, and the moment the passes never returns, so don’t miss it. The mental occupation of things that will not grant you a better future should not bother you in any way. This distraction will not. Don’t bother with it.
